HISTORY OF CHICHESTER PRIORY PARK CRICKET CLUB

Chichester Priory Park Cricket Club traces its origins back to 1851, when the first recorded match was played in Priory Park on 7 August 1851. The formation of the Priory Park Society the previous year laid the groundwork for creating a dedicated cricket ground, sporting facilities, and community space in the heart of Chichester.

Cricket in the area, however, has roots stretching back centuries. Records show the game being played locally as early as the 1600s, with parish matches and village contests gradually evolving into more formal clubs during the 18th and early 19th centuries.

By the mid‑1800s, Priory Park quickly became a hub for cricket in West Sussex. The club played an influential role in the wider cricketing world; member Arthur Hobgen helped finance James Lillywhite’s pioneering 1876–77 tour to Australia—an expedition that produced the first ever Test match.

Throughout the 20th century the club expanded significantly. Despite the interruptions of two World Wars, it continued to grow, developing strong senior teams, establishing a thriving Colts section, and forging a reputation for high‑quality cricket.

Today, Chichester Priory Park Cricket Club continues to grow and stands as one of Sussex’s most historic and respected clubs, combining tradition with a vibrant modern cricket programme for all ages.

Sue Price's A Brief History of Chichester Priory Park Cricket Club celebrating 150 year is a good read and brings alive the first century and a half of the club.
