1XI v Roffey

Chichester Priory Park 1st XI enjoyed their annual return to their spiritual home in Priory Park, securing a commanding eight-wicket victory over Roffey 2nd XI. In doing so they ensured things remain tight at the top of the division 3 table whilst providing great entertainment for the picnicking public of Chichester.

On a day neither captain wanted to lose the toss in the now customary 30-degree heat, the Chi skippers luck ran out, with Roffey choosing to bat. Roffey never really got going against a disciplined Chichester bowling attack. Regular wickets prevented any meaningful partnerships from developing, and the visitors were eventually dismissed for 127 in 33.1 overs. The home sides bowling unit maintained excellent control throughout, keeping the scoring rate in check and applying pressure in the field. The pick of the Chi bowlers were Elijah Stead and Tim Wergan both picking up 4 wickets apiece, with Elliot Scott and Ollie Davies also grabbing a wicket each.

In reply, Chichester made light work of the chase. The top order batted positively, whilst remaining composed. They played some glorious shots that made the most of the lightning-fast outfield. Tim Wergan scored 54, Toby Toft 41 and Simon Hasted 34no ensuring Chi reached the target with eight wickets in hand after just 24.5 overs. On an excellent batting pitch this further highlighted how impressive the bowling display was to restrict the visitors to a low total.

The comprehensive win secured the full 30 league points, with Roffey taking 3 points. An excellent return to form following a disappointing result the previous week and avenging a similarly one-sided affair away at Roffey earlier in the season. Chichester will be hoping the winning momentum continues as they visit Middleton next week.

2Xi v Goring

Chichester Priory Park 2nd XI fell to a five-wicket defeat away to Goring-by-Sea CC despite posting a competitive 210-9 from their 40 overs. The result saw Goring claim 30 points, with Chichester taking 12 after an encouraging batting display.

After being asked to bat first, Chichester recovered well from an early wobble thanks to an excellent 57 from Fred Huggett, who anchored the innings, before Matthew Croker shifted the momentum with a superb 70 from just 41 balls, striking 14 boundaries. Useful contributions from Ben Hubbard (22), Finlay Rustell (16) and Sravan Sajeev (14) helped the visitors reach a challenging total. Goring shared the wickets around, with Ruan Smit, Oliver Watkins and Vengateshwaran Vijay all claiming two wickets, while James Fryer and Stuart Carter took one apiece.

Goring's reply got off to a strong start through Benjamin Whitehead (42) before David Rogers' unbeaten 67 proved the difference. Priory Park fought hard, with Sravan Sajeev claiming three wickets, while George Hobkirk and Finlay Rustell picked up one wicket each, but Rogers and Oliver Watkins (26*) guided the hosts to victory in just 30.2 overs.

Despite the defeat, there were plenty of positives for Chichester, particularly the performances of Huggett and Croker with the bat. Priory Park will look to bounce back when they return to action next weekend.

3XI v Hamani

The 3’s visited Crawley for the 2nd time in 2 weeks, this week Himani were hosting. The hosts won the toss and on a warm day elected to bat, with accurate bowling in a tricky pitch runs were difficult to come by, Saqib Khushnood snared 3 wickets and whilst Oscar Dutton was wicket less his miserly shell of 8 overs for 25 runs as an opening bowler piled on the pressure, Matt Brown 2-18 and Rupert Gillett 2-17 bowled with good control and with Musawer taking a wicket with his first ball to complete a strong bowling effort the hosts were restricted to 135 from 40 overs.

In reply it was Hanif Shakoori who anchored the innings as batters came and went at regular intervals, ably supported by Ben Kuntze who showed great maturity  and patience to blunt a decent bowling attack.

Wickets however continued to fall and it was at 60-6 when James Mayne joined Stu Gillett, the game hung in the balance.

Despite some fierce bowling and a few bruises, Gillett continued to score steadily whilst Mayne defended for his life !!, eventually over a period of 17 overs of solid resistance from the old guard the energy leaked from the bowlers, after some lusty blows from Stu Gillett it was left to James Mayne ( all-rounder ) to carve the ball over backward ward point for 4 runs and a hard fought win.

A huge performance and 30 points sees the 3’s maintain a promotion spot in Division 7
